Relaxing Poolside Overlooking Bombay Bay…

A view over the bay of Mumbai

A view over the bay of Mumbai

Mumbai was a suprisingly beautiful and interesting city, even slightly less hectic than I had been promised. Perhaps that had something to do with the spacious and stylish pool of the Trident Hotel at Nariman Point which is the perfect escape from the bustling and expansive city of Mumbai. The city is beautiful, with historical and charming reminants of old Bombay and I thoroughly enjoyed strolling from the Trident Hotel down to the famed Gateway of India and the Taj Palace – landmarks of this exciting Indian city. I stumbled across a streetmarket and art fair, spectated cricket matches in the Oval Maidan and shopped for pashminas in the markets, I ate streetfood (half of which I gave to a boy who asked to share my lunch!) and watched street entertainers, including a man playing a flute through his nose! It was this swirl of colour, music, dance, movement that makes Mumbai such a fascinating city, the traditions juxtaposed between Indian and Colonial British – the cricket and the dancing, the majestic Taj Palace and the crumbling colonial buildings that surround it. Probably the most difficult part of strolling around Mumbai is learning to cross the roads – often 8 lanes of traffic with no road markings or organisation – but when you can manage to do so it is such a sense of accomplishment, it should be considered a sport! Not that any sport here could compete with cricket which is played in any open space from dusk until dawn and what a dawn – the pool at the Trident is the perfect place to watch the spectacular sunsets over the bay, along with a cocktails of course!
