Touring a Township in Cape Town…

Smiles at the Township in Cape Town

When I visited Cape Town one of the highlights of my trip was a Township Tour. It is wonderful, as well as important in my opinion, when travelling to step outside of the hotel or resort to see how the real people live. There is perhaps no better example than South Africa where Apartheid once ruled, and to visit a Township enables you to see how these wonderful and welcoming people live is an enlightening experience. We were taken to a small building with no furniture and sat in a circle on the floor and asked where we thought we were, an old lady gave me a big metal bucket with a frothy liquid in it and asked me to take a sip and pass it on – it was a pub and the frothy liquid was beer! We also were taken to some of the houses and observed daily life – including slicing up sheepsheads that had been seared on a burning fire! We then bought snacks for the children and they all wanted their picture taken, those happy faces remind me that we live in a world that deals with suffering on a regular basis and that not everyone is so blessed, but happiness can endure and we must continue to smile and be grateful for how lucky we are!
